Early Life and Training
William Forsythe was born in New York City in 1949.
He began his dance training at Jacksonville University in Florida and later at the Robert Joffrey Ballet School. In 1973, he joined the Stuttgart Ballet as a dancer and subsequently began choreographing for the company.
Stuttgart Ballet and Breakthrough
Over seven years, Forsythe created over twenty ballets for the Stuttgart Ballet and leading companies including Ballet Basel, Munich Ballet, Deutsche Oper Berlin Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and Netherlands Dance Theatre.
In 1984, he became director of the Frankfurt Ballet, following his groundbreaking full-length work "In the Middle Somewhat Elevated" in 1983.
